In John’s personal and brief letter known as 3 John he mentions Demetrius (whose name means devoted) and was most likely the person who brought this letter to Gaius. Based upon these words he was himself a stranger to the members of this church and therefore gets a word of commendation from John as he says that this brother has a habit of being a blessing to those of his local church in Ephesus, those that knew him and more importantly to the truth itself. Here we note his fidelity and practice of servanthood has been noticed and he is commended to Gaius. Indirectly in this section John is giving us the best way to overcome the evil of dee-ot-ref-ace and it is not by repaying evil for evil, but instead by maintaining your course following Christ by doing good. Mimic Jesus, John says! Don’t let bad behavior from sinful servants be a distraction, instead follow the one that is following Christ and not the one following pride and ambition. Christian character is best seen with consistency and John says that was the case with Demetrius.
